Product Engineers & Forward Deployed Engineers — New Opportunities in the AI Era!

An engineer considering software delivery stages, product analysis and direct customer collaboration, illustrated through workflow and team panels

AI coding agents have made writing code faster than before.

But does faster code generation mean we can deliver software to production just as quickly?

How the bottleneck moves

This is where the concept of a bottleneck matters.

Writing code used to take a large share of our time. As code generation speeds up, the bottleneck shifts to stages such as code review, testing and deployment.

What if those stages are automated too?

The next bottleneck may be identifying the real business problem and deciding what a successful solution looks like.

Two engineering roles become important here.

1. Product engineer

An engineer who can understand users’ real needs, make product decisions, define success criteria and deliver solutions using AI agents.

2. Forward deployed engineer (FDE)

An engineer who works directly with customers to understand their business workflows and problems, then builds and deploys technical solutions suited to that environment.

These roles are not entirely new concepts, but they are receiving more attention and becoming more important in the AI era.

Does the education system need to change?

We still train many junior developers primarily in programming languages, frameworks and solving well-defined tasks.

That knowledge matters, but it is not enough on its own.

We need to give the next generation practical experience in problem discovery, product thinking, requirements engineering and AI agent orchestration.

For example, instead of assigning another CRUD application, we could ask students to identify a problem in a real business, define the requirements and deliver a solution using AI.

My view

Future value will depend on the ability to identify the right problem and deliver the right solution, alongside the speed of code generation.

We should focus on developing next-generation engineers who can solve real-world problems as well as use AI tools.

Do you think our universities and IT training programs are ready for this change?
